How to Use

Mahjong Solitaire (also called Mahjong Tiles or Shanghai) stacks a full 144-tile mahjong set in a multi-layer layout. On each move you clear two tiles that are both 'free' and identical — a tile is free when at least one of its left or right sides is open and no tile rests on top of it. Clear every tile to win; if no matching free pair remains you are stuck. The tiles use the traditional characters, circles, bamboo and honour suits, and the game constantly works out which tiles are clickable, with hints and undo to help you review.

FAQ

Is Mahjong Solitaire the same as real mahjong?

No. Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player matching game — you do not form mahjong hands. You simply click two identical tiles that are currently free to clear them, aiming to empty the whole board.

Why can't I click some tiles?

Only 'free' tiles can be clicked: at least one of their left or right sides must be open, and no tile may be resting on top of them. Covered or blocked tiles unlock once you clear the tiles around them.

What if I get stuck?

When no free matching pair remains the game declares a dead end; click 'New layout' to reshuffle, or use Undo to step back and try a different order.

How many tiles are there?

The classic turtle layout uses all 144 tiles, covering the characters, circles, bamboo and honour suits, with four of each kind.
