Hoarding chips on one hand, leasing out compute on the other—Mark Zuckerberg's strategy is far more ambitious than most people realize.

What is Meta Compute? In simple terms, Meta is turning its massive internal GPU clusters—originally built to train and run its own AI models—into a pay-as-you-go cloud service for outside developers and companies. Think of it as Meta entering the same market occupied by Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, but with a twist: direct, bundled access to Meta's own Llama models, which are among the most popular open-weight large language models available today.

Why does this matter for AI startups?
